How to Play Hearts
Hearts is played with four players and a standard deck of 52 cards. Each player receives 13 cards.
- The player holding the 2 of Clubs starts the first trick.
- You must follow the suit that was led whenever possible.
- If you cannot follow suit, you may discard another legal card.
- The highest card of the leading suit wins the trick.
- Each Heart is worth one penalty point.
- The Queen of Spades is worth 13 penalty points.
- The player with the lowest score when the match ends wins.
Passing Cards and Breaking Hearts
At the beginning of most hands, select three cards to pass to another player. The passing direction rotates between left, right, across, and no pass.
Hearts cannot normally be led until a Heart has been discarded during an earlier trick. This is known as breaking Hearts.
How to Shoot the Moon
If one player captures all 13 Hearts and the Queen of Spades, that player has captured all 26 penalty points. Instead of receiving those points, the other three players receive 26 points each.
Shooting the Moon is risky, but it can completely change the outcome of a match.
